Fall and winter in upstate SC and western NC are beautiful. WJFJ radio, 1160 AM is located in
Columbus NC and a visit through the area during this time of year is a special delight. One of
USGN's friends from WJFJ is James Metcalf, the station's Public Relations Representative and
the on the air personality. James is involved in several aspects of Gospel Music, and enjoy's all of
them equally. The son of Reverend and Mrs. Jimmy Metcalf, James is the second oldest of ten
children. He laughed as he said "Dad always wanted a big Sunday school!" The Christian
influence of Godly parents kindled his love for Gospel Music, and fostered his involvement in
church music. Along with his duties at the radio station, James is music director for Fork Creek
Baptist Church in Saluda NC. James father worked for a radio station during his youth and James
feels he inherited that love for Gospel radio from his father. "Dad always wanted to get back into
radio, and I guess you'd say I'm kind of living dad's dream," he said. James is also a songwriter
and a singer. He began singing at a very early age. He has grown into a singing career as well as
a radio career. James is a representative of Broken Rose Publishing. His songs are published
with the Naples NC company. "I love being involved in my community and being a part of the
only radio station in Polk County NC," James said "I promote a concert each month at the local
elementary school, with several local groups. These concerts have become very popular." James
goal is to continue to promote Southern Gospel music by all the means God allows. Playing the
artists music and locating churches to book the artists in is a major help to the groups. James also
enjoys talking to artists on the phone. He has made a number of friends by taking these calls and
doing interviews. James and I had a nice long visit in Louisville KY during NQC. At USGN we
appreciate his friendship, and if you're ever in the western NC area tune into James Metcalf and
Carolina's Gospel Song Connection on WJFJ, 1160 AM.
